Nature's Stories
Discover the inspiration behind the stained glass creations of Tanglewood Tales.

Inspired by Nature and the Beauty of the British Isles
My love for wildlife and the variety of landscapes within the British Isles inspires the stained glass panels and commissions I create.

Inspiration
My passion is the natural world and it’s wild creatures. I live next to fields where the skylarks sing and foxes haunt the garden at twilight and dawn.
Several different types of owl live in a small wood nearby, I especially love to see the barn owl ghosting across the field on his nightly hunt and to follow the darting flight of bats around my house.
My garden is a haven for birds, hedgehogs and even grass snakes sometimes sun themselves near the pond. I regularly walk in the Peak District, which I love...and am thrilled when I see the huge, brown Derbyshire hares racing on what is left of the unspoilt grasslands.
I am inspired by the creatures within my garden and the local landscape and this led to the creation of Tanglewood Tales,my pictorial stories which include the creatures I love to observe.
Tanglewood Tales are painted onto handmade stained glass, then fine detail is etched into the enamel. I use stained glass, copper wire and reclaimed wood to create individual works of art.
Creating the Panels
Each piece of painted and etched art glass tells a story, capturing nature in detail. The stunning colours and textures in each piece of glass help to bring the 'Tanglewood Tales' to life.

Inspiration
Often, my work is inspired by the colour and texture of the unique pieces of art glass itself, which may suggest seascapes, landscapes, forests, sunsets or magical realms.

Details in the glass
I look at each individual piece of glass, and imagine a design. This is then realised through research and drawing on paper, before the design is then transferred onto the glass panel.

Crafting Shapes
After this, I begin the time-consuming process of painting the shapes and the washes which create the backgrounds and the creatures. Fine detail is etched into the paint, with great care and attention to bring each individual piece to life.
